Skate it UP! 2015

February 7th, 21st and 28th, 2015

CONGRATS!  We did it!  We raised more than $14,000 in February — enough money to build a school in India.  And we’re well on our way to building the next school in Africa.

What an amazing month!  A HUGE thank you to everyone who supported CIA’s efforts to fight child poverty and build schools in India and Africa.  Building on the momentum from last year’s events, Skate it UP! 2015 marks our 4th and biggest winter empowerment campaign yet!  Held in 3 locations across Toronto, Skate it UP! is designed to engage youth to be a positive force of social change — in a fun and active way!

This past February, Skate it UP! 2015 was attended by more than 500 skaters and supporters as we raised awareness about the transformative power of education to break the cycle of poverty and create a new cycle of progress.  In the process, we raised enough funds to build a school for underprivileged street children in India — and we’re so close to building our second school in Africa!

We were joined by hundreds of people in Oakville, York and Etobicoke — and thousands more joined in our social media campaign with pictures and tweets about Skate it UP! sent to more than 400,000 followers on Instagram and Twitter, more than 14,000 ‘likes’ and tons of retweets and ‘favourites’ on Twitter. You can check out hashtag #skateitup to see some of them.

We’re so thrilled to know that Skate it UP! empowered so many youth to make real contributions to improving the lives of children everywhere.  And we’re deeply grateful for the spectacular support of our sponsors (like Telus, Canlan and Mattel) and special guests (like Degrassi cast members, Ana Golja, Aislinn Paul, Sarah Fisher and Sara Waisglass), Miss Teenage GTA Neha Banerjea, figure skaters, parliamentarians, and so many others.

Ebola Warehouse Event

December 22nd, 2014

CIA members and their families teamed up with GlobalMedic to fight Ebola!   We volunteered at GlobalMedic’s Mississauga warehouse to pack personal protective equipment and household protection kits that were sent to West Africa.

The Ebola outbreak continues to ravage West Africa (mostly Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone).  As of Dec. 11th, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) have identified over 17,908 Ebola cases that have resulted in more than 6,380 deaths. This is a particularly grave illness that has a fatality rate of more than 70%.  Canadian researchers have developed experimental vaccines to inoculate those at risk; however, until these vaccines can be fully tested and rolled-out, the best defence for people in these countries is to protect themselves and their households.  GlobalMedic is a Toronto based humanitarian aid organization that has been responding to the Ebola crisis by sending personal protective equipment (“PPE”) and kits to Ebola affected communities.

Feed it UP! / Warm it UP! 2014

November 20th, 2014

Instead of collecting candy at Halloween, CIA members collected hundreds of non-perishable food items, winter jackets, blankets and clothing items.  On Sunday November 20th, about 20 CIA members volunteered at Kerr Street Food Bank to prepare and serve food for the hungry in Oakville and hand deliver the winter clothes.

Chalk it UP! 2014

Rise up! Chalk it UP! Be a hero!

We’re holding our next Chalk it UP! event on Sunday September 21st, 2014 and we’d love it if you could join us!

All the proceeds from the event will go towards building a school for the rural poor as part of Free The Children’s education program.  It takes $10,000 to build a school and help hundreds of children rise out of the cycle of poverty.  That’s what we’re aiming for — and with your help, we can do it together!  We made super progress at last year’s Chalk It Up! 2013 event and we are getting closer to reaching our goal.   Learn more about this amazing program.  Check out Vishal’s blog about all the fun that was had — and also this this wonderful article written about the event in the Oakville Beaver!
